The best thing at Castle Mountain is the amount of snow. Castle is a gem of a resort that has avoided the typical upgrades of coffee, condos and spas. Located just east of the continental divide in the Westcastle Valley of Alberta, in the Rocky Mountains, “The Castle” last saw an incredible 1,131cm of deep dry champagne powder. That’s a great year, but no worries, 910cm is the going average around this place. The mountain has a fairly steep pitch with the summit being only 863 metres from the base of the mountain. There are beginner and intermediate runs, but this resort seems to attract the more experienced riders. Maybe its the number of opportunities for the extreme skier, the many untried lines. Check out rides like KC’s, Miss Piggy and Chimo’s but be prepared for some extreme terrain. The Castle’s season usually runs from December through April and you’ll find 6 lifts to get you up and out to over 1,750 acres of terrain. In business since 1966, The Castle has changed ownership several times and opened brand new Mount Haig in 2006, adding more choice of groomed cruising to the already famous reputation. At The Castle, you’ll find 67 trails of skiing and snowboarding as well as groomed cross country trail. Childcare, rentals and lessons are available.
