In 1986 construction began to develop Mount Allan into the official site of the 1988 Olympic Alpine events. Located very close to Calgary, Alberta, Nakiska features some of the best cruising and carving trails in the Rockies. Nakiska employs superior snowmaking and grooming systems to maintain fabulously wide open and long trails. Nakiska is a skier and snowboarder’s dream and is the Official Alpine Canada Alpine National Training Centre.
A bit of interesting trivia is that Nakiska pays homage to Alberta’s first nation people by naming some of their most challenging runs for significant native leaders of the late 19th Century. You find such runs as Walking Buffalo, Alberta’s most famous Stoney Chief and leader of the Bearspaw band; the Eagle Tail, a Peigan chief of the last century – Chief Sitting-On-An-Eagle-Tail; and Powderface, named for a prominent Stoney family. So if these names are tribute to history, then Nakiska welcomes the future with a new Gold Chair Express, a high speed quad lift that promises to get you to the top in under five minutes.
Nakiska is known as “Calgary’s Closest Mountain” and is an ideal learning resort for new skiers or snowboarders and yet boasts exciting terrain for the intermediate to advanced skier. There is fresh powder abundant and new “Monster” glades. You’ll experience world-class dining, accommodation and spas in the Kananaskis Village.
